Why can’t the pre-app checker identify me?

Dear James,

My husband and I have both tried using the credit card eligibility calculator on the Money Saving Expert website, but for some reason it can’t find us. We are definitely on the electoral roll and our names and addresses are correct. Could you check this for us please?

Susan, Bury-St-Edmonds

Dear Susan,

It’s good to hear that you are using this moneysavingexpert (MSE) online tool, one of a number of pre-application credit eligibility checkers available on the internet. This is a great way of finding out how likely you are to be accepted for credit products before you apply, such as credit cards, loans and mortgages. Previous search footprints on your credit report can have a varying impact on your credit rating, depending on the type. An eligibility calculator leaves a soft search footprint which you see on your credit report but lenders don’t, so this type of search will have no impact. I’m sorry to hear that you are experiencing problems with the MSE tool. It might be a good idea to review your and your partner’s credit reports carefully, checking to make sure everything is accurate and up to date and, in particular, whether your electoral roll details are included and showing correctly. If you find anything on your Experian Credit Report you disagree with or need help understanding just let us know. It might be the case that everything is in order with your credit report and the issue may lie with the MSE tool itself. If that is the case and you drop them an email explaining the issue, I’m sure they’ll be able to help you. (June 2016)
