Each month, as part of the European Commission's Business Surveys programme, we carry out a survey of contractors' activity in the UK. This survey provides the only short-term forward indicator of trends in the industry.

Construction Industry Focus uses the survey data to build a picture of past performance and future trends in the industry. We translate the raw data into an easily understandable set of indices for the following indicators:

• Contractors' activity
• Tender enquiries
• Order books
• Short-term employment prospects
• Short-term tender price prospects

Analysis of work-in-hand, labour and materials costs is undertaken on a quarterly basis.
