Will claiming benefits affect my credit rating?

Dear James,

Will claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance affect my credit rating and would this be investigated in any future credit check?

Jack, Cheadle

Dear Jack,

Income isn’t currently included in your credit report, including any form of benefit such as Jobseeker’s Allowance. But when you apply for credit any lender will want to understand your financial situation and whether you can responsibly manage an account with them, so they may ask you to provide information about your income as part of the application process.  Lenders will usually use this information, alongside details they may already hold about you if you’ve dealt with them before and information from your credit report, to calculate their own score.  This score will help them assess your application.  To get a better idea of what information is included on your credit report it’s sensible to obtain a copy and review it carefully, particularly looking to see that everything is accurate and up to date. If you find anything you disagree with or need help understanding just let us know. (May 2016)
